Last night marked a milestone for expats and internationals in Weert: the very first English-language stand-up comedy show in the city! Thanks to the collaboration between Munttheater, Theater de Huiskamer, and Lightcity Comedy Eindhoven, Weert locals and expat residents finally enjoyed live English comedy close to home, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds.
Karan Karthik headlined the show. As a regular on the Dutch comedy scene, he has performed at festivals like UICF and MAD Goat. He is currently touring his solo show ‘Any Color You Like’, where he explores life’s contradictions with humor and insight.
For many internationals and non-Dutch speakers, it was a relief not to have to travel to Eindhoven for a night out. As one attendee shared:
"How great to have an English-language event right here in Weert!"

Fransisca, one of the admins of the Expat in Weert Facebook Group, added:
“It’s wonderful that Munttheater and Theater de Huiskamer made this possible. It was also great to share the evening with local Weertenaren who are open to new cultural events. Seeing people from different backgrounds laughing together creates a welcoming atmosphere and a stronger sense of community.”
Other visitors were equally enthusiastic:
“It’s exciting to see Weert’s event offerings become more diverse. Now there’s something for everyone, from expats to young people and new residents.”
The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly—just what you hope for on a Tuesday night. It’s a shame that Theater de Huiskamer will soon close its doors, as it proved to be a perfect venue where even first-time visitors felt at ease.
Lightcity Comedy Eindhoven also highlighted the importance of giving a stage to emerging talent: “It’s great that not only established comedians, but also up-and-coming performers, are given the opportunity to grow here.”
For non-Dutch speakers and the expat community in Weert, Munttheater continues to organize more shows with minimal or no language barrier under the Language No Problem series.

The success of this event shows that Weert is ready for more international and inclusive events. Hopefully, there will be many more nights where everyone—from locals to expats—can come together to enjoy culture and connection in Weert.
